Flashback to 2012: Eddie Bravo vs Shawn Williams
It's hard to believe it's been 7 years already. It was the summer of 2012 and Budo Dane and I had a live weekly jiu-jitsu show. This was well before Facebook live or YouTube live. Each week we had guests on who would share stories and techniques with us. This particular week I wanted to get two of my friends on to settle their beef - Eddie Bravo & Shawn Williams. You see, Shawn has a guard, aptly named the Williams Guard. Eddie Bravo has his Rubber Guard system. There was one particular move - "The London" as Eddie calls...
What Does a 10th Planet Black Belt Say About Training in the Gi?
I’ve known Brent Littell for quite a few years now. He was already a 10th Planet black belt when he decided to deepen his gi knowledge by training at Gracie Barra HQ (where I was also training at the time). I was immediately impressed with Brent’s mobility. Even though he’s a big guy he moves very well! After getting his black belt in the gi, now he’s one of a select few that have worked there way through two systems of grappling! In the video below, Brent did an interview for our sister site Budovideos.jp and it aired on the Japanese...
Nic Gregoriades on Jiu-jitsu, Fitness & Longevity
Nic Gregoriades is a well-known Jiu-Jitsu instructor with the unique title of being Roger Gracie's first black belt. Since Nic just came out with a new fitness instructional called BudoFit, I wanted to ask him a few questions about fitness related to jiu-jitsu and longevity. Jake: You’ve had a long history in jiu-jitsu. It’s natural as we mature that the way we roll and practice changes. Some people become more efficient with their movements, some limit their rolling. How is your jiu-jitsu practice now compared to years past? Nic: As I approach 40, I have definitely changed the way I...
Dropping the B from BJJ - by Budo Jake
In the US, since the 90’s the art that I practice and teach has been called Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or sometimes Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Take off the gi and it might be called grappling, submission grappling, or nogi grappling. Some will argue that Judo guys have been doing pretty much the same thing we BJJ guys have been doing, but for a lot longer. While I agree in part, most Judo clubs focus much more on stand up, and much less on the ground. (Photo: Old School Judo in Japan) Back when the Rorion and other Gracies brought the art to...
Taking a Look at the Estima Lock - Budo Jake Chats with Victor Estima
The Estima Lock is powerful submission that affects the tendons and ligaments of the foot, the same way a toehold does. Victor Estima created this technique nearly 10 years ago as a way to deal with the tricky guard of his brother - world champion Braulio Estima. While not previously a fan of footlocks, the Estima Lock quickly became a favorite tool of Victor. In fact he submitted all of his opponents with it at the Nogi World Championship in 2011. Shortly thereafter I brought Victor in to film his seminal instructional - The Estima Lock by Victor Estima. There...
