Sumo is a traditional Japanese sport that dates back over a thousand years, deeply rooted in the country’s culture and history. It is a form of full-contact wrestling where two large, heavyset wrestlers, known as sumo wrestlers or rikishi, face off in a circular ring called a dohyo. The primary objective of the sport is to force the opponent out of the ring or to make any part of their body other than the soles of their feet touch the ground. Sumo is characterized by its ceremonial rituals, which include the purification of the ring with salt, stomping to ward off evil spirits, and the elaborate entrance ceremonies (dohyō-iri) performed by the wrestlers. These rituals emphasize the sport's spiritual origins, which are believed to be linked to Shinto practices and ancient agricultural rites.

Beyond its competitive aspect, sumo is also a highly disciplined lifestyle. Rikishi live in sumo stables (heya), where they follow strict routines that include rigorous training, a specific diet to maintain their size and strength, and adherence to a hierarchical social structure. The life of a sumo wrestler is demanding, with training beginning early in the morning and involving a range of exercises that build both physical power and mental endurance. The sport has six annual grand tournaments (honbasho), where wrestlers compete for rankings and the prestigious title of yokozuna, the highest rank in sumo. Despite its ancient roots, sumo continues to be a popular sport in Japan, attracting a global audience fascinated by its unique blend of athleticism, tradition, and ritual.
