Who is Don Angier?
Don Angier (1933–2014) was a renowned American martial artist, widely respected as the inheritor and head of the Yanagi-ryu Aiki Bugei, a classical Japanese martial art emphasizing softness, precision, and deceptive techniques. Angier's expertise in traditional samurai arts, including unarmed combat, swordsmanship, and other weapons techniques, set him apart as a teacher and historian of martial traditions.
He began training in martial arts during his youth and later studied extensively under Kenji Yoshida, a Japanese immigrant and Yanagi-ryu master. Angier dedicated his life to preserving the principles of Yanagi-ryu, blending traditional philosophy with a pragmatic teaching style. Known for his technical precision and charismatic teaching, Angier became a sought-after instructor and demonstrator, leaving a lasting legacy in the martial arts community.
