About the Authors:
Zen Do Kai Chief Instructor Takashi Ozawa
Born on January 20, 1961. He encountered full-contact karate while studying at Tokai University, and in 1984 he joined a karate organization with a strong mixed martial arts flavor, and in 1985 he founded the Iida branch of the organization. During his activities up until 1998, he produced numerous winners and prize winners in national and regional competitions, and is well-known for his teaching skills. In January 1999, he founded the Mixed Martial Arts Karate Zen Do Kai, with the aim of establishing karate as a true practical martial art and of its educational value. He is currently the chief instructor of the Zen Do Kai, which has 1,000 members in the general division and 1,000 members in the junior division, and is very busy every day as the chairman of the NPO Japan Martial Arts Karate Federation.
Kenji Akiyama, Director of the Technical Department of Zen Do Kai
Born on August 23, 1970. He studied full-contact karate from high school, and at the age of 20, he joined the Iida branch of the karate organization led by Master Ozawa. In 1994, he placed third in the open weight class of the Hokutoki Karate Championship, and won the heavy weight class of the same tournament two years in a row in 1995 and 1996. He then switched to the Vale Tudo route, and in the Vale Tudo Experimental Match and Real Fighting Karate Championship hosted by Zen Do Kai, he fought mixed martial artists from other organizations and Brazilian fighters, going undefeated in 12 matches. In a club fight held in January 2001, he had a good match with Yamamoto Kenichi, the first UFC-J champion, and expectations are high for his future success.
