- Naoyuki Taira: Born in 1963 in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, Taira started karate in middle school and studied combat karate at Daidojuku in high school. After moving to Tokyo, he trained under Satoru Sayama and became a shooting instructor. Taira debuted as a professional in shoot boxing, fighting against top international competitors. He transitioned to mixed martial arts, competing in various promotions including Rings. Inspired by the UFC, he trained in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at the Carley Gracie Academy in San Francisco and experienced Vale Tudo in Brazil. In October 2002, Taira concluded his competitive career with a KO victory in his retirement match, leaving a significant legacy in Japanese martial arts. He now leads the Strapple dojo, promoting a holistic approach to jiu-jitsu and training the next generation of fighters.
