Keiko – The Practice of Aikido

By Nomura Shihan, Chief Instructor of Osaka Aikikai

This third volume in Nomura Shihan's instructional series completes the foundation established in the previous two programs. While the first explored the fundamental principles of Aikido and the second focused on their technical application, this volume is devoted to Keiko—the living practice through which those principles become instinctive.

The program is organized into three progressive sections: Ki o Nukanai, Ki o Dasu, and Ki ni Awasu. Each section presents a carefully selected sequence of techniques designed to illustrate a specific aspect of Aikido training. Although the techniques themselves differ, they all express the same underlying principles, allowing practitioners to develop a deeper understanding of the art beyond its external forms.

The first section, Ki o Nukanai ("Maintaining Ki"), teaches the importance of remaining connected, centered, and fully engaged at all times. In practical terms, this means moving the body as a unified whole while maintaining a stable yet relaxed posture, a properly lowered center of gravity, and an unwavering state of awareness. These qualities form the foundation of balanced and effective movement.

The second section, Ki o Dasu ("Projecting Ki"), explores the ability to extend one's energy naturally and confidently. Through carefully structured exercises, Nomura Shihan demonstrates how to cultivate sensitivity, initiative, and proper timing, enabling practitioners to invite and harmonize with the movement and energy of Uke rather than simply reacting to it.

Finally, Ki ni Awasu ("Harmonizing with Ki") brings together the concepts developed throughout the series. Using fundamental Aikido techniques, Nomura Shihan demonstrates how to blend naturally with an opponent's energy while integrating the principles of centered movement, extension of Ki, and harmonious adaptation into every technique.

Rather than teaching techniques in isolation, Keiko reveals the process through which Aikido becomes a natural expression of movement and intention. It is an invaluable guide for practitioners who wish to move beyond mechanical repetition and experience the deeper principles that transform practice into true martial understanding.
