Shinkage-ryu was founded by Kamiizumi Ise-no-kami Nobutsuna during the Warring States period. After receiving the inka, Yagyu Sekishusai Muneyoshi devised the secrets of "Muto", and at the invitation of Tokugawa Ieyasu, his son Munenori became the military tutor for the second and third shoguns, Hidetada and Iemitsu. From then on, Yagyu Shinkage-ryu firmly established its position as the shogun's family school, and Munenori's "Heiho Kadensho" and "Fudochi Shinmyoroku" written by Takuan for Munenori had a great influence on the spiritual life of Edo samurai.

Yagyu Shinkage-ryu was passed down in two lines: Edo Yagyu as the military tutor for the shogun's family, and Owari Yagyu as the military tutor for the Owari domain of the Gosanke. Although Owari Yagyu has been passed down to the present day, the Edo Yagyu family separated from Shinkage-ryu after the Meiji period. However, Yagyu Genshu, the last head of the Owari Yagyu family in the Edo period, also studied the techniques of Edo Yagyu.

This book provides a detailed explanation of the "Genshu Shinkage-ryu" style of martial arts, which was passed down from Genshu to Kobe Kinshichi and Kato Isao, and is still practiced today at the Shunpu-kan dojo in Nagoya.
