Goju-Ryu (Japanese for hard-soft style) is one of the four important traditional Karate styles. It also contains many elements of the traditional Chinese Boxing. The designation Goju-Ryu was created by Chojun Miyagi (1888-1953). A Kobudo Master asked one of Miyagi's best students about the name of his Martial Arts school he practiced. But he could not give an correct answer. So he came up with the name "Half-Hard Style". He reported this incident to Master Miyagi who finally decided to name it after the Bubishi (kept secret over a long periode of time) and its third sentence of the "Eight rules of fist fighting", which says: "The way of inhaling and exhaling is hardness and softness.", or "Everything in the universe inhales soft and exhales hard". In 1933 Goju-Ryu was officially acknowledged by the Japanese all Martial Arts Association.
