A new technical book that sharply expresses and explains the essence of karate-do kata
Posthumous work of the last warrior of the modern era, Shiokawa Hosho
Connecting to the next generation
Five years have passed since the publication of my previous book, "True Tradition Shitoryu Karate-do." During that time, I have passed the milestone of 88 years old and have finally entered old age. While I still feel that my passion for martial arts is the same as when I was young, I feel that I must also pass it on to the next generation, so I have entrusted my son, Naonari, to succeed me as the second head of Shitoryu Karate-do Shiokawa-ha. On January 13th of last year, we held a succession ceremony and celebration in Shimonoseki City to celebrate my 88th birthday. Many people attended, including those related to the Japan Karate-do Association, as well as other karate organizations, iaido, and jodo organizations, and both my son and I were reminded of the weight of the responsibility of carrying the style on our shoulders. This book was produced to commemorate the succession of the second head of the school, and I sincerely hope that all the members of the school who will carry on the tradition in the next generation will unite around the head of the school and ensure that the techniques are passed down in an authentic way.
I have studied under Mabuni Kenwa, the founder of Shitoryu Karate, since before the war and have devoted myself to the training of karate. Shitoryu places particular emphasis on kata and its decomposition, and is characterized by the idea that kata is kumite. It is also a logical physical exercise and has excellent physical education effects. It can be said to be a physical culture that Japan can be proud of.
I also believe that the idea of pacifism, represented by "no first move in karate," is something that is strongly desired in the society of the future. Perhaps it is because I have actually experienced war that I feel the need for a peace-loving spirit in the strongest martial arts, but I would like the young people who will build the future to inherit this idea.
