This is the first book by Yoko Okamoto, a world-renowned aikidoka, who has reexamined what culture and martial arts are through her work.
In Chapter 1, Togo, where he met young boys who practiced martial arts every day in faraway Japan; in Chapter 2, Portland, America, where he moved with his family and opened his first dojo; and in Chapter 3, Paris, France, the martial arts powerhouse where he met his teacher and gained friends. Looking back on his experiences of literally coming into direct contact with the people living there and building relationships, he explores what people in each country seek from Japanese culture and martial arts, and how they try to give martial arts back to society in their own realities, exploring their uniqueness and similarities, and depicting the path of human exploration through martial arts.
In Chapter 4, Japan, he introduces his daily training at the Aikido Headquarters Dojo (Tokyo), where he first encountered Aikido, and the establishment process and activities of his current base, Aikido Kyoto and Nishijin Dojo (Kyoto), as well as a special interview about "training methods" and "teaching methods." His daily Aikido practice and exploration are discussed in more detail.
At the end of the book, there is an explanation of the terms and a series of photographs of the techniques, so that even those who are unfamiliar with aikido can read it.
"Sensei, why do we do aikido?"
How did the author answer the question of a boy who practices aikido in a small village in Togo?
Through this book, the author's feelings towards aikido and people that underlie his strength and beauty are revealed, and we will see further evolution and deepening in it!
