About the Author:
Masakatsu Funaki, born in 1969 in Hirosaki, Aomori Prefecture, is a legendary figure in professional wrestling and mixed martial arts. He debuted at just 15 with New Japan Pro Wrestling, becoming the youngest-ever professional wrestler. After gaining experience in Europe, he joined the UWF and later Pro Wrestling Fujiwara Gumi before co-founding Pancrase in 1993, a pioneering MMA organization that combined various combat disciplines. As Pancrase’s top competitor, Funaki won the prestigious King of Pancrase title twice. His historic bout with Rickson Gracie in 2000 marked the culmination of his 15-year fighting career. Post-retirement, he has focused on training and management, shaping the future of Pancrase and MMA.
