Goju-ry is one of the most popular styles of traditional Karate, and Hokama Tetsuhiro is one of the most sought-after masters of Goju-ryu in the world today.
In this series, the only technical manuals written directly by Hokama Sensei, learn the history, traditions, philosophy and Kata of Goju-ryu as practiced in the Kenshi-kai Headquarters in Okinawa.
Hokama Sense was born in 1944 and began training informally under his grandfather, Seiken Tokuyama, in 1952. In 1961 his formal training began at the Naha Commercial High School Karate club, as well as at the Dojo of the legendary Higa Seko (1898-1966), a student of both Higaonna Kanryo (1853-1915) and Miyagi Chojun (1888-
1953). He also trained under Matayoshi Shinpo (1922-1997), from whom he learned Kobudo, Hakutsuru-ken (White Crane fist) and Kingai-ryu. Upon the death of Higa Seko in 1966, he continued his training with Higa's assistant instructor, Fukuchi Seiko (1919-1975).
Hokama Sense opened the the first ever Karate Museum in January of 1987, in Nishihara, and built a monument in Okinawa to noting it as the birthplace of Karate-do.
