EXPLORING THE ESSENCE OF DAITO-RYU & AIKIDO
SEEKING THE ANSWER DISCOVERED BY SOKAKU TAKEDA THROUGH KENJUTSU
WHAT WAS SOKAKU TAKEDA’S ANSWER?
Hakki, Aiki, Taichuken...
Discovering the nature of Aiki through swordsmanship—and how to develop it.
Sokaku Takeda, the great figure who revitalized Daito-ryu, is said to have studied:
• Aizu-han Denkei Ono-ha Itto-ryu Kenjutsu*
• Jikishinkage-ryu Kenjutsu
*The sword tradition said to have been transmitted to Kakuyoshi Yamamoto of Daito-ryu.
Could it be that the classical schools of Japanese swordsmanship once possessed methods for generating Aiki from the lightest contact between two blades—neutralizing an opponent’s power while keeping the upper body completely relaxed?
I call this “Aiki through the unity of sword and jujutsu.”
— Tomohiro Ishikawa, Aikido Rakushinkan
