During the Kamakura period, the Gassan smiths of Dewa flourished. The Gassan tradition is characterized by Ayasugi (fine wood grain pattern) in the steel and intricate blade engravings. Continuing this lineage for over 800 years is Gassan Sadatoshi. After graduating from university, he entered the path of swordsmithing under the tutelage of his late father, the Living National Treasure Gassan Sadakazu. Currently, as the head of the Gassan lineage, he actively mentors successors and has produced numerous outstanding swordsmiths.
