Hung Gar Vol 1-5: Good Fundamentals

The Videos:
• This is a five volume DVD set. Upon receiving them, I opened each DVD and did a quick scan on each. That revealed volume one was incorrectly labeled and was a repeat of volume five. I Contacted Budovideos Inc and they sent a correct replacement for volume one DVD.
• There are no closed captioning or subtitles. If you are deaf or hard-of-hearing you may still gain something from visually following along. Why no one ever stops to think about people with hearing loss when they make martial art videos is beyond me. I have a good collection of martial art videos and not a single one has subtitles.
• There are no menus: videos appear to be made during the VHS era and simply copied to DVD.

Content – reviewed volume one and two:
• Each video runs about 57 minutes so the lessons within are fairly short.
• Anyone who has spent time studying another system will not have trouble learning the basics. That assumes someone actually has learned the basics of another system and is not an itinerant martial art student that shows up in many schools. In other words, you are not looking for some secrets, but have spent time learning fundamentals. If you are brand-new to martial arts, you should still be able to gain something from these videos. However, see the next bullet point.
• As the lessons are short, Sifu does not go into much detail. There are segments called ‘Key Point’s that are important and it would be wise to pay particular attention to these to help ensure correct practice.
• In addition to the basic stances, blocks, punches and kicks, they also put them together into combinations for practice.

All-in-all these videos look like a good introduction to Hung Gar.
