Fighting Karate is one of the most influential practical karate manuals ever published, written by the founder of Ashihara Karate. First released in 1985, this book presents a no-nonsense approach to real fighting, emphasizing efficiency, positioning, and the concept of sabaki—the art of evasion and counterattack.

Unlike traditional kata-focused texts, Ashihara’s method is built around applied combat, teaching how to move to an opponent’s blind side and neutralize attacks with decisive counters. The techniques are illustrated step-by-step, making it highly accessible for both beginners and experienced martial artists.

The book covers fundamental techniques alongside realistic fighting scenarios, focusing on how to actually win a fight rather than simply perform techniques. It remains a cornerstone text for practitioners interested in full-contact karate, self-defense, and practical application.

About the Author:

Hideyuki Ashihara (芦原 英幸, December 5, 1944 – April 24, 1995) was a renowned Japanese martial artist and the founder of Ashihara Karate, a practical and dynamic style emphasizing strategy, circular movement, and real-world application. Born in Hiroshima, Japan, Ashihara began his martial arts journey with judo before transitioning to karate. He trained under Masutatsu Oyama in Kyokushin Karate, becoming one of its top practitioners.

In 1980, Ashihara founded his own system, Ashihara Kaikan, focusing on logical techniques, adaptability, and his innovative concept of sabaki—efficiently avoiding an opponent's attack while creating counteroffensive opportunities. Known as the “Sabaki no Ashihara,” his legacy endures through his books, teaching materials, and the Ashihara Karate organization, which continues to spread his philosophy worldwide.

Ashihara passed away in 1995 due to ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), leaving behind a profound impact on the martial arts world.
