About the Author

BRUCE TEGNER was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1929. Both of his parents were professional teachers of judo and jujitsu; they began his formal instruction in the martial arts When Bruce was two years old!

In a field in which most individuals concentrate on a narrow specialty, Bruce Tegner's experience was unusual. His education covered many aspects of weaponless fighting of many styles, as well as sword and stick techniques. At the age of twenty-one, after becoming California state judo champion, he gave up competition to devote himself to research, course development, teaching, and teacher-training.

In the U.S. armed forces Mr. Tegner trained instructors to teach unarmed combat; he taught military police tactics; he coached sport judo teams. Later, he trained actors and devised and choreographed fight scenes for movies and television.

From 1952 through 1957 he operated his own school in Hollywood California, where he taught men, women, and children, exceptionally gifted students, and blind and disabled persons. With his colleague and sometimes co-author, Alice McGrath, he developed many special courses and teaching methods, some of which have been adopted by physical education departments, martial arts schools, and police academies throughout the world.

Bruce Tegner books range from basic, practical self-defense to exotic forms of fighting for experts and enthusiasts.
