Who is Kanshu Sunadomari?

Kanshu Sunadomari (1921–2010) was one of the early senior students of Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido. Born in Kumamoto, Japan, he began training directly under Ueshiba in the formative years of the art, receiving instruction during a period when Aikido was still evolving and closely tied to its spiritual and martial roots.

After World War II, Sunadomari returned to Kumamoto and became a central figure in spreading Aikido throughout Kyushu. He established a strong regional base for practice and devoted his life to preserving what he understood as the deeper spiritual essence of Aikido, often emphasizing the concepts of harmony, universal energy, and the unification of mind and body.

He authored several writings on Aikido philosophy and technique, including works that explore the connection between Aikido and its spiritual foundations. His teachings are known for maintaining a strong link to the early Daito-ryu influenced period of Aikido and for preserving the feeling of direct transmission from Ueshiba.

Today, his legacy continues through the students and organizations that carry on his approach to Aikido in Japan and abroad.
