Wing Chun in Taiwan Studying with Lo Man Kam, Nephew of Yip Man Book by Richard Doell
This is an autobiographical account of training under master Lo Man Kam nephew of Yip Man's in the late 1980's in Taipei, Taiwan.
Studying at his school in the beginning and for a long time was a real humbling experience. The Tai Chi master Cheng Man Ching’s adage “to invest in loss” is particularly relevant. I had always trained hard style martial arts where the teacher emphasized full speed full contact sparring with gloves or no gloves. The emphasis was on using strong drilled combinations , mostly Thai kickboxing and San Shou /San Da and selected moves from Karate and Shaolin. Even my first Wing Chun teacher was a cross trained stylist mixing moves from Taokwondo and Wing Chun freely. However the Wing Chun was far more sophisticated in this school in that the top fighters in the school would hit you the moment you exerted and attempted to apply strength.
I myself made the mistake of telling sifu that some day I wanted to teach Wing Chun. So I put my goal of mastering the wooden dummy technique in a goal picture on the wall and plunged into training. Little did I know I was to train in the morning with private lessons for seven years and go at night to fight with my seniors for ten years until 1998.
