About the Author:
Born on March 31, 1948 in Saitama Prefecture. At the age of 15, he entered the Oyama Dojo, the predecessor to the Kyokushin Kaikan. He trained under Sosai Oyama Masutatsu, the founder of Kyokushin Karate, and obtained his black belt at the age of 19. His achievements include winning the 5th All Japan Championship and coming second in the 1st World Championship. In April 1980, he was appointed head of the Saitama branch and opened a dojo. In April 1994, following the death of Sosai Oyama, he became the Supreme Advisor and Chief Instructor of the Kyokushin Kaikan. In January 2003, he founded the Kyokushin Karate Federation Kyokushinkan and assumed the position of Director. Aiming to "return to the origins" of Kyokushin Karate, in April 2007 he held a match under "serious match rules" that permitted punches to the face, a first in Kyokushin history, at the 5th All Japan Weight Championship. Currently, in pursuit of his ideal "martial arts karate," he devotes his energy to teaching both in Japan and overseas.
