About the Instructor:

Michael Lee Fowler, born December 30, 1982, in Virginia Beach, Virginia, is an American Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) black belt known for his rapid rise in the sport, achieving his black belt in just 3.5 years under Lloyd Irvin, reportedly the third fastest American to do so. Starting with a high school wrestling background, Fowler began formal BJJ training in 2001 at Irvin’s academy in Maryland, leaving college to pursue it full-time. He gained fame for his leopard-print hairstyle and competitive success, including five American National Championships, an Asian Open Championship, and a notable footlock victory over BJJ legend Saulo Ribeiro at the 2007 ADCC. Fowler competed extensively, facing top names like Renzo Gracie and Marcelo Garcia. In 2012, he left Irvin’s team to train at Atos Jiu-Jitsu, later settling in Hawaii, where he runs North Shore Jiu-Jitsu Club in Haleiwa with his wife, Tracey Goodell, a BJJ black belt. Fowler has transitioned to an off-grid lifestyle, focusing on teaching and mental health benefits from BJJ.
