Taijiquan for Fighting.
Refinement Comes Later.

Within the training system of Chen-style Taijiquan, there are two distinct paths:

  • Yilu (First Form): A long-term method focused on conditioning the body and cultivating internal power.
  • Erlu (Second Form / Pao Chui): A dynamic system filled with explosive movements, leaps, and fajin—designed to develop real combat ability.

In Chenjiagou, the birthplace of Taijiquan, the art was historically known as “Pao Chui of the Chen Family.” This suggests that Erlu was not just supplementary training—it was likely the primary method used in real combat.

Erlu goes far beyond simple fajin drills. It is a complete system built to develop immediate, practical fighting ability in life-threatening situations.

There is a saying:
“Yilu guides the hands through the body; Erlu guides the body through the hands.”

Unlike Yilu, which emphasizes internal refinement, Erlu prioritizes:

  • Mobility
  • Aggression
  • Real-world application

In other words, Erlu is about survival.
And only after that foundation is established does true internal refinement (Yilu) fully emerge.

Erlu cultivates not just explosive power, but also decisiveness, fighting spirit, and mental activation—all of which ultimately lead back to mastery of Yilu.
