The techniques of the Enmei-ryu style, founded by the young Musashi, have survived to the present day!
After defeating Yoshioka Ichien, Musashi began referring to himself as an Enmei-ryu practitioner. By age 24, he had mastered the "Hyodokyo" style of writing. In his later years, Musashi renamed his style Niten Ichi-ryu.
Although the Enmei-ryu techniques spread in Nagoya, where Musashi stayed for three years around age 50, they were thought to have disappeared by the Showa era. However, these techniques have been preserved at Shunpu-kan dojo, where Yagyu Shinkage-ryu swordsmanship and Owari Nuki-ryu spearmanship are the primary practices.
This work, supervised by Shunpu-kan's director Kato Isao, reveals eleven Enmei-ryu techniques for the first time. It features detailed commentary, an exploration of Musashi's time in Nagoya, and a history of the Enmei-ryu techniques by Director Kato.
