Celebrating the 60th anniversary of the founding of the All Japan Karate-do Goju-kai, a documentary titled "Gogen Yamaguchi: Legend of Karate-do" has been completed with full cooperation from the All Japan Karate-do Goju-kai, the American Goju-kai, the International Goju-kai, and the Yamaguchi family. This documentary follows the life of Gogen Yamaguchi, the Fist Saint who introduced Goju-ryu Karate-do to the world, using precious films that were left behind by the Yamaguchi family. It marks the first video compilation of numerous ancient films from the Yamaguchi family archives. The documentary features testimonies from his eldest son, Gosei, his third son, Goshi, and his youngest daughter, Wakako, providing insights into the life of their father. Rare footage includes demonstrations of free sparring, kata performances, and austere practices, bringing back to life the lifelong dedication of Gogen Yamaguchi to Karate-do.

Gogen Yamaguchi

  • Born on January 20, 1909, in Kagoshima Prefecture. Since childhood, he studied Shingenn-ryu Kenjutsu, Karate-do, and Judo. In 1929, he enrolled in Ritsumeikan University and established the Karate-do Research Club. He devised free sparring, revolutionizing Karate training systems. From 1931, he studied under Master Miyagi Chojun. In 1937, he was given the dharma name "Gogen" by Master Chojun and entrusted with spreading Goju-ryu on the mainland. He moved to Manchuria in 1939 and returned to Japan in November 1947. In May 1949, he opened a dojo in Asakusa Nihon-tsutsumi. In May 1950, he founded the All Japan Karate-do Goju-kai. He devoted his life to spreading Goju-ryu Karate-do, traveling not only throughout Japan but also worldwide. Known as "The Cat," his fame resounded globally. He passed away suddenly due to acute heart failure on May 20, 1989, at the age of 81.
