Yoshiji Soeno Born September 29, 1947 in Tokorozawa, Saitama. He started learning judo in the fourth grade of elementary school and was also active in volleyball in junior high school. He started karate when he entered high school. On September 1, 1964, he entered the Kyokushin Oyama Dojo in search of real strength. He honed his skills under the guidance of Taketo Kurosaki, Tadashi Nakamura, Shigeru Oyama and Yasuhiko Oyama. In April 1966, he entered Josai University. He established the Kyokushin Karate club himself and underwent rigorous training. On April 15, 1969, he made his professional debut at the inaugural NET-TV World Kickboxing tournament. He fought a full round against Kannam Pai of Thailand, who had knocked out Tadashi Sawamura, who was extremely popular at the time, and attracted a lot of attention. On September 20 of the same year, he participated in the first All Japan Karate Championship held by the Kyokushin Kaikan. He won the tournament block and defeated Kazuyuki Hasegawa in the final league, but lost to Terutomo Yamazaki and came in second. In March 1970, he was appointed head of the Kyokushin Kaikan Saitama branch by Chief Instructor Oyama, and opened the Kyokushin Saitama branch and kickboxing "Soeno Gym" in Tokorozawa. It was the first dojo in Japan to offer both karate and kickboxing. In September 1980, he left the Kyokushin Kaikan, and in May of the following year, he founded Shidokan with Kajiwara Ikki as chairman. Together with Maki Hisao and others, he organized the World Karate Federation. Since then, he has trained many famous athletes in both karate and kickboxing, and has made every effort to spread karate around the world. As of 2017, he leads an organization that boasts tens of thousands of members in 36 countries around the world, and spends his days training and teaching.
