Itosu-ryu Karatedo derives from the Shuri-te lineage of Sokon Matsumura. Anko Itosu inherited the tradition from Matsumura, expanded the curriculum, and introduced karate to the public. Itosu’s senior student, Kenwa Mabuni, became the 2nd Soke of Itosu-ha. Mabuni’s senior student, Ryusho Sakagami, succeeded him as the 3rd Soke. In 1969, Itosu-ha was renamed “Itosu-ryu.” The 4th Soke of Itosu-ryu, Sadaaki Sakagami, continues his father’s mission to faithfully transmit the kata that have been preserved for three generations. This DVD introduces the fundamentals of these kata.

About the Instructor:

Sadaaki Sakagami is a Japanese karate instructor and the 4th Soke (headmaster) of Itosu-ryu Karatedo, a style rooted in the Shuri-te tradition of Okinawan karate. He is the son of Ryusho Sakagami, the 3rd Soke of Itosu-ryu, and inherited leadership of the system as part of a direct family lineage dedicated to preserving and transmitting the curriculum of kata and fundamentals passed down through the Itosu lineage.

Under his direction, Itosu-ryu has continued to emphasize traditional karate fundamentals, structured kata training, and the preservation of classical pedagogy as taught through the Sakagami family line. His work focuses on maintaining continuity of the system as it was transmitted from Anko Itosu through Kenwa Mabuni and Ryusho Sakagami, with particular attention to faithful preservation of form and teaching methodology rather than sport-oriented modification.

He is primarily known within traditional karate circles rather than mainstream sport karate, and his teaching is closely associated with the historical Itosu-ha curriculum and its structured approach to kihon (basics), kata, and pre-arranged partner training.
