Gozo Shioda (Shioda Gozo) Born September 9, 1915, in Yotsuya, Tokyo. From a young age, he studied Judo and Kendo, and in 1932, he entered the dojo of the Aikido founder, the late Morihei Ueshiba. He spent about eight years as an uchideshi (live-in disciple) training closely with the founder. In 1941, he graduated from Takushoku University and was dispatched to China, Taiwan, and Borneo to promote Aikido. Returning to Japan in 1946, he resumed training under Morihei Ueshiba. In 1955, he won the Grand Prize at the Japan Comprehensive Martial Arts Tournament. In 1956, he established the Yoshinkan Aikido Dojo. In 1961, Morihei Ueshiba granted him the highest rank at the time, 9th dan in Aikido. He dedicated himself to reviving Aikido during the challenging post-war era. In 1957, he established the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Riot Police Aikido training system. He also taught Aikido as a compulsory subject for female police officers in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department.
