En/Ten & Sabaki

By Nomura Shihan, Chief Instructor of Osaka Aikikai

In this second volume, "En/Ten & Sabaki" (Circular Integration and Evasive Movement), Nomura Shihan, assisted by A. Malet, presents a clear and systematic training method designed to guide practitioners through the three essential stages of mastering any martial art: understanding the underlying principles, refining technical execution, and developing true skill through practical application and continuous practice.

Rather than focusing on techniques alone, this program emphasizes the concepts that give life to Aikido. By understanding these principles, practitioners learn to move naturally and efficiently, allowing techniques to arise spontaneously instead of relying on memorized forms.

To make this progression easy to follow, the instructional is organized into five sections:

  • Sabaki no Hokko – The direction and principles of body movement.
  • Ki Absorption – Learning to receive, blend with, and redirect an opponent's energy.
  • Nagare & En/Ten – Developing fluidity, circular movement, and continuous motion.
  • Suwari Waza – Applying these principles through seated techniques.
  • Buki Waza – Integrating the same concepts into traditional weapons practice.

Throughout the program, Nomura Shihan demonstrates that the principles governing movement remain the same regardless of the technique or weapon involved. The ultimate objective is to move beyond rigid forms and discover the deeper essence of the art.

An exceptional instructional program for practitioners of all levels, En/Ten & Sabaki provides a practical path toward understanding the principles behind what Nomura Shihan calls "Aikido without form"—an Aikido where technique flows naturally from correct movement, timing, and the harmonious expression of Ki.
