Robert Koga (1930-2013) was a renowned martial artist, police tactics instructor, and founder of the Koga Method, a specialized system of control techniques widely adopted by law enforcement agencies across the United States.

Born in California to Japanese parents, Koga's early life was marked by adversity when his family was placed in a Japanese internment camp during World War II. There, he began studying judo to protect himself, laying the foundation for his martial arts journey.

After serving in the Korean War with the U.S. Air Force, Koga joined the Los Angeles Police Department in 1955. Drawing on his extensive background in aikido, judo, and other martial arts, he revolutionized police defensive tactics by developing less injurious control techniques that remained highly effective. He served as the LAPD's primary self-defense instructor for over 25 years.

In 1982, Koga established the Koga Institute to teach his methodology to law enforcement agencies nationwide. The Koga Method emphasized minimal force application, officer safety, and control techniques that reduce injury risk for both officers and suspects. His system became particularly known for its effective baton techniques, control holds, and tactical approaches.

Beyond law enforcement, Koga achieved a high rank in Aikido and was recognized as a pioneer in adapting traditional martial arts for practical modern applications. He authored several influential books including "The Law Enforcement Club and Baton Manual" and "Arrest Control Tactics."

Koga's legacy continues through the thousands of law enforcement officers trained in his methods and the ongoing influence of his tactical approach, which balanced effectiveness with humane control techniques in high-stress situations.
