Hwa Rang Do Books

Hwa Rang Do, translating to "The Way of the Flowering Knights," is a comprehensive and multifaceted Korean martial art that encompasses a vast array of techniques and philosophies. Its rich history is deeply rooted in the traditions of ancient Korean warrior scholars and has been meticulously preserved and adapted for contemporary practice.

The origins of Hwa Rang Do can be traced back to the ancient Hwarang warriors of the Silla Dynasty (57 BC – 935 AD). The Hwarang were an elite group of young men, chosen for their noble spirit and dedication, who trained rigorously in martial arts, academics, and the principles of loyalty, honor, and courage. They played a crucial role in unifying the Korean Peninsula and were revered for their exemplary combat skills and moral integrity.

The modern system of Hwa Rang Do was founded by Dr. Joo Bang Lee in the 20th century. Dr. Lee, along with his brother Joo Sang Lee, studied under Suahm Dosa, a monk who was one of the last remaining practitioners of the ancient Hwarang traditions. Combining these teachings with his extensive knowledge of various martial arts, Dr. Joo Bang Lee formalized Hwa Rang Do as a distinct and comprehensive martial art.

Hwa Rang Do is renowned for its extensive curriculum, which includes striking, joint locks, throws, grappling, weapon techniques, and healing arts. It emphasizes both hard and soft techniques, allowing practitioners to adapt to any combat situation. The art also incorporates meditation and Ki (internal energy) training, reflecting its holistic approach to personal development and self-mastery.

The philosophy of Hwa Rang Do is encapsulated in its "Nine Principles of Mental and Physical Conduct," which guide practitioners not only in martial arts but also in their daily lives. These principles emphasize virtues such as loyalty, filial piety, trustworthiness, courage, and self-control.

Today, Hwa Rang Do is practiced globally, with dojos and training centers dedicated to preserving and promoting its rich heritage. Practitioners are drawn to its comprehensive system, which offers a balanced approach to physical training, mental discipline, and spiritual growth.
