About the Author:
Hajime Isogai (1871–1947) was a pioneering Japanese judoka and the second person to achieve the rank of 10th dan, the highest rank in judo, awarded in 1937. Born in Nobeoka, Miyazaki Prefecture, he was the eldest son of Tsunehisa Isogai, a master of Sekiguchi-ryu jujutsu. In 1891, he joined the Kodokan in Tokyo, studying under Jigoro Kano, and later taught judo at the Third Higher School in Kyoto and the Dai Nippon Butoku Kai. Renowned for his expertise in newaza (ground techniques), he played a key role in promoting judo and shaping its early development, including contributions to the standardization of kata.
