About the Author:
Manzo Iwata (岩田 万蔵), born February 9, 1924 in Tokyo and died June 4, 1993, was a leading Japanese karate master of Shito-ryu. A direct student of founder Kenwa Mabuni, he also trained in judo, kendo, aikido, jōdō, and Nanban Satō-ryū kenpō. He served as vice-president and later president of Shitōkai (All Japan Karate-do Federation – Shito-kai) and became the first president of the World Shito-ryu Karate-do Federation. In 1993 he received the Japan Budō Meritorious Service Award. He authored books on Shito-ryu karate, and his son Genzo Iwata continued his legacy as leader of Shitōkai.
