Aikido is a modern Japanese martial art founded by Morihei Ueshiba (O-Sensei) in the early 20th century. Drawing upon several classical Japanese martial traditions, Aikido combines empty-hand techniques with the study of traditional weapons, particularly the bokken (wooden sword), jo (staff), and tanto (wooden knife). Today, Aikido continues to grow in popularity around the world as both an effective method of self-defense and a path of personal development.

Unlike martial arts that rely on strength against strength, Aikido emphasizes blending with an attacker's movement and redirecting their energy through throws, joint locks, and controlling techniques. The goal is to neutralize an attack with maximum efficiency and minimum harm, while cultivating balance, awareness, timing, and mental composure. Aikido develops both the body and the mind through disciplined practice.

In the acclaimed instructional series Aikido from A to Z, Grand Master Reiner Brauhardt (8th Dan Aikido, Kyoshi) presents a comprehensive curriculum covering every stage of Aikido training. From fundamental movements to advanced techniques with and without weapons, each volume provides clear, systematic instruction suitable for practitioners of all levels.

One of Europe's most respected Aikido instructors, Reiner Brauhardt has practiced Aikido for more than four decades. A pioneer of the art in Germany, he has taught professionally since 1985 and continues to lead his Aikido school in Siegen, where he has trained generations of students.

Volume 8 – Tanto Defense focuses on defending against knife attacks using the traditional wooden tanto. Brauhardt demonstrates a wide range of practical defenses against common knife attacks, combining nage waza (throwing techniques) and katame waza (controlling and locking techniques) in multiple variations. Each technique is presented with careful attention to timing, positioning, and technical detail, making the material accessible to both beginners and advanced practitioners.

Throughout the program, students also deepen their understanding of essential Aikido principles such as ma-ai (proper distancing), zanshin (continuous awareness), timing, and control. These concepts form the foundation of effective Aikido practice and are indispensable for developing confident and efficient self-defense skills.
