Shinto, meaning "the way of the gods," is Japan's indigenous belief system, existing long before historical records began. It encompasses a wide array of practices, attitudes, and institutions, all deeply connected to the Japanese landscape and seasons, as well as their relationship with human inhabitants. These Shinto beliefs have significantly influenced the philosophy behind many of Japan's traditional martial arts.
