Tomiki Aikido DVD with Ken Broome
Throughout his life, Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido, taught many exceptional students, each of whom developed a unique interpretation of his teachings. Among the most influential was Kenji Tomiki, whose vision led to the creation of what is now known as Tomiki Aikido or Shodokan Aikido.
A distinguished Judoka as well as an accomplished Aikidoka, Tomiki believed that Aikido and Judo complemented one another. While preserving the principles of traditional Aikido, he sought to create a systematic training method that included structured free practice and competition. He viewed both arts as modern expressions of the classical schools of Japanese Jujutsu, emphasizing efficiency, precision, and practical application.
In this instructional program, you will study a carefully selected collection of techniques drawn from the Koryu no Kata, the traditional forms of Tomiki Aikido, along with the modern training methods that distinguish the system. Featured kata include:
- Randori no Kata (also known as Junana Hon no Kata) – the seventeen fundamental techniques that form the technical core of Tomiki Aikido.
- Tanto Randori no Kata – the formalized methods of free practice against a knife attack.
The program also includes the Goshin Ho Kata of the Shodokan Dojo, as well as an introduction to Tomiki Aikido's dynamic training methods, including Kakarigeiko, Hikitategeiko, and Toshu Randori. These progressive exercises develop timing, distance, adaptability, and the ability to apply technique under realistic conditions while maintaining the principles of Aiki.
Instruction is provided by Ken Broome and the Hogg brothers, all senior instructors at Dr. Lee Ah Loi's renowned dojo in London, one of the leading centers for Tomiki Aikido in the Western world. Drawing upon decades of experience, they present a clear and systematic guide to one of the most distinctive and technically sophisticated branches of Aikido.
