Practical Karate by Nakayama and Draeger outline self-defense, protection and survival in various real-world situations. The [ten] Essential Points repeated thru-out the first book are a well-organized and presented plan [from large to small scale] with clear writing and photos to present sharp Practical Karate methods. One of Nakayama's and Draeger's main concerns was to really present methods that made good practical sense -- learnable and effective and matching the attack-situation using classical Shotokan Karate methods of self-defense.

About the authors:

Masatoshi Nakayama, for many years the chief instructor of the Japan Karate Association, began his karate training as a student of Gichin Funakoshi in 1932. Also a student of Chinese martial arts and the scion of a noted family of kenjutsu instructors, he directed the expansion of Shotokan karate throughout the world and played a major role in the shaping of modern karate.

Donn Draeger, an internationally recognized authority and author of many books on the martial arts of Asia, was a pioneer Westerner in the practice of Japanese martial arts and an instructor in the International Division of the Kodokan in Tokyo. He was the first non-Japanese to compete in the All-Japan High-Rank Holders' Judo Tournament at the Kodokan.
