Koda Gunshu (born 1957 in Nagasaki Prefecture) is a highly accomplished kendo instructor and educator, holding the rank of Kyoshi 8th Dan. He is currently a professor at the Graduate School of Human Sciences at the University of Tsukuba and serves as the head coach of the University of Tsukuba Kendo Club.

He began practicing kendo in the third grade of elementary school and quickly rose through the ranks of competitive kendo. While attending Nagasaki Higashi High School, he won the individual championship at the Inter-High School Kendo Tournament, establishing himself early as an elite competitor.

After graduating from the University of Tsukuba, he returned to his hometown of Nagasaki to work as a teacher before later returning to Tsukuba University in a faculty and coaching role. Throughout his competitive career, he achieved an outstanding record, including winning the individual championship at the 22nd All-Japan High School Athletic Meet Kendo Tournament (1975), placing third at the 26th All Japan Kendo Championship (1978), and winning the individual title at the 6th World Kendo Championships (1985). He also won the National Teachers’ Kendo Tournament individual championship and participated in the All Japan East-West Kendo Tournament ten times. He has represented at the National Sports Festival (Kokutai) multiple times.

As a coach, Koda Gunshu has had a major impact on university kendo in Japan. Under his leadership, the University of Tsukuba Kendo Club has won the All Japan Intercollegiate Kendo Championship eight times, producing numerous top-level competitors and champions.

Beyond competition and coaching, he is widely respected for his teaching methodology and clarity in instruction. He is frequently invited to seminars and training sessions across Japan.

His contributions to kendo extend into governance and development of the sport. He has served as a Japanese Olympic Committee Strengthening Staff member (2011), a member of the All Japan Kendo Federation Referee Committee, Executive Director of the All Japan School Kendo Federation, instructor for national training programs, Standing Committee Member of the Kanto Student Kendo Federation, Standing Director of the Ibaraki Prefectural Kendo Federation, and instructor for social sports education training courses.

Today, Koda Gunshu is recognized not only as a decorated former competitor but also as one of the most influential kendo educators in modern Japanese university kendo.
