Like many martial arts, Judo was originally not only a method of self-defence, but a system for self-development as well. The authors of this book look at the principles of Judo behind the techniques, principles that the authors feel are in danger of being forgotten as Judo is becoming increasingly dominated by sportsmen and women aiming for medals.

Written mainly with the practising Judoka in mind, Judo — the Gentle Way offers not only practical advice to be used on the mat, but also, through chapters such as the Art and Etiquette of Judo, Home Practice and Meditation, shows how the serious approach to Judo should permeate every aspect of the Judoka's life. The emphasis is on Judo as art rather than sport, but the authors recognize that competitions are an integral and valuable part of Judo. The book is therefore designed for both contesting Judoka and non-contestants, whether Kyu grades, Dan grades or instructors, and is illustrated throughout with photographs and drawings.
