Kunimasa Matsuba began his journey in martial arts at the age of 11 with kendo and continued through his high school years. After graduating from university, he participated in an agricultural training program in the United States, where he gained recognition for teaching martial arts. Inspired to become a martial arts instructor upon his return to Japan, Matsuba studied iaido, kendo, karate, and other disciplines.
In 1983, Matsuba’s interest in sword-making led him to apprentice under master swordsmith Yasuhira Kobayashi. He later trained with Hiroki Ando, another senior apprentice, in Okayama. Matsuba obtained his swordsmith certification in February 1989 and established his forge at his home in Hyuga, Miyazaki Prefecture.
Starting with Bizen-style swords, Matsuba transitioned to creating swords aimed at embodying the legacy of the Bizen Nagamitsu school. He is known for his bold yet refined craftsmanship, seeking to replicate the steel of ancient masterpieces through his own ironmaking process. Matsuba has received numerous accolades, including the President's Award from the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords, the Kunzan Award, and the Kanshan Award.
Additionally, Matsuba has trained under Seishu Sunaoka, the head of the Banshinkan Aikido school, where he integrates sword principles into his aikido practice. His expertise in both sword-making and martial arts has earned him a distinguished reputation in the field.
