Have you ever noticed how some elite athletes look so graceful when they perform? They seem to move effortlessly. Sure, some of them are born with great prowess, but the real truth is they fully understand the fundamentals of what it is they’re trying to do.

I know for a lot of people, learning fundamentals can be boring. Doing the same thing over and over and over can seem daunting and at times pointless. It’s a heck of a lot more fun to be doing the fancy stuff, isn’t it? But have you also noticed that a lot of these fancy Dan’s tend to be flash in the pans? I can tell you this, no matter what the sport is the Hall of Famers always have one thing in common. Each and every one of them has mastered the fundamentals of their particular sport.

When it comes to fighting, be it sport or self-defense, there are a lot of things that you have to cover. Perhaps in no other endeavor is the learning and mastery of fundamentals more important than when it comes to fighting. Lack of fundamentals in a real world violent encounter can cost you your life. Lack of fundamentals in the sporting environment can prevent you from landing any future fights. Sure you may look good with the fancy moves but if it’s going to eventually cost you a chance at a title shot, you need to be more than just looking good. You have to be good!

I Was Bored Too

When I was a young boy learning how to box and wrestle I would always get bored listening to my coaches telling me to do these mundane things over and over again. I wanted to be flashy and fancy like Muhammad Ali. There was no way that I could envision Muhammad Ali doing the same boring drills I was doing. But in a relatively short period of time I came to realize the error of my ways. You see, the only reason Muhammad Ali was able to be fancy was because he did indeed have a mastery of the basic fundamentals. After the point was driven home to me (quite painfully) I realized that my coaches were right and that I was wrong and that if I was ever going to learn to fight I had to learn the basics.

So I painstakingly did the techniques slowly, properly, and consistently. In just a short time I began to develop. It was as if a light bulb went off. And I never regretted having to work on my fundamentals ever again.

Why I Made This DVD

I will be brutally honest with you. I’m not very impressed with most of the fighters I see nowadays. Many of them are tough no doubt. But there is a difference between being tough and being skilled. Yes we all need to have a combination of both. But I believe it has to be balanced. No matter how tough you are, there’s going to be someone who who is just as tough but more importantly, may have more skill. I’ve always opted to be as skillful as I possibly could be. And I want to continue to show people that it is not the fancy moves that make you skillful, rather it is the mastery of the basics. That is the key to ensuring longevity in your skill sets.

I’m lucky to have knowledge and the ability to impart it and I’ve always felt an obligation to share what I know. Sometimes what I do is not the popular thing. But one thing’s for sure, some others may have come and gone, but Tony Cecchine is still around.

So for those of you who really want to learn to master the art of fighting, I’ll leave the fancy stuff to the showmen. I’m here to give you the truth.

Why You NEED To Know How To Move Properly

Getting from point A to point B is not always the easiest thing to do. Especially when you’re trying to do a well amalgamated style, you can get clumsy and off-balance rather easily. I have a striking and wrestling background for over 40 years now so it’s easier for me to see certain things than other straight strikers or straight grapplers can see. I’ve had a lot of experience through the years and I’ve learned to make adjustments, tweaks, and improvements in how I move. Being fast, powerful, and always balanced are some of the keys when it comes to footwork. You have to be an incredibly efficient transportation machine. After all, you are trying to transport pain and punishment to your opponent.

Like with everything basic, you have to start at the root. It stems from your stance. From there the key elements of body alignment, balance, muscular synergy, and positioning are to be focused on. Have you ever seen a jungle cat or champion thoroughbred racehorse run? They’re poetry in motion. They carry this tremendous size and raw power and they move so efficiently and so beautifully. That’s what you need to strive to become. No I don’t mean a jungle cat or racehorse, I’m talking poetry in motion.

Whether you’re a boxer, wrestler, MMA, or traditional martial artist, great movement is for you. Balance and footwork are truly the foundation from what a successful fighter is built from. There is no substitute for solid fundamentals.
