Japanese samurai, and their mysterious cousins, the ninja, are known throughout the world. Ninja are now so popular that the tourist information counter at the Kansai International Airport is often asked by foreign visitors where ninja houses can be seen in the Kansai area.

There is great interest in ninja and kengo (master swordsmen) domestically as well. There are numerous manga, movies and video games in which ninja are the main heroes, and their superhuman abilities and wisdom have won them many fans.

In ancient Japan kengo were master swordsmen adept in singular and formidable skills, the control of energy and willpower, and perhaps not as well known to foreigners as ninja. In a word, kengo were top-ranked bushi, and samurai were members of the bushi or warrior class who served a regional lord or daimyo.

However, ninja were not the creation of the human imagination, but real persons who were greatly active in the shadows of Japanese history. Ninja were organized around clans and villages, many of which were located around present-day Nara and Kyoto Prefectures. Ninja first originated in the Asuka period (538-710 AD) and were skilled in the arts of stealth: ninjutsu or shinobi. They were famous for their ceaseless training with swordsmen and mountain ascetics, and were hired out by those in power for assassination, information gathering, undercover work, and other espionage activities. Ninja, who were exceptional in many martial arts, physical prowess, knowledge and wisdom, risked their lives for their lords and survived many a war. What in reality did their superhuman abilities and wisdom consist of?

Perhaps what attracts contemporary people so much to ninja are their sharp senses, agility, willpower, freedom, and the extent of their knowledge and wisdom. We therefore endeavored to make a guidebook that introduced actual ninja and swordsmen, what is known of their history, and historic sites and legends from the Kansai area — from Kyoto, Nara, Shiga, and Mie Prefectures.
