A rare historical account of Daito Ryu Aikijujutsu and the teachings of Takuma Hisa, written by his student Yu Amatsu.

Takuma Hisa was one of the most important figures in the preservation of Daito Ryu. While working at the Osaka Asahi newspaper, Hisa and his colleagues received instruction first from Morihei Ueshiba and later directly from Daito Ryu master Sokaku Takeda. In 1939, Hisa received menkyo kaiden (license of full transmission) from Takeda.

Author Yu Amatsu later studied under Hisa while working as an editor at the Asahi newspaper. Hisa took a particular interest in Amatsu and personally transmitted to him aspects of the Takeda lineage of Daito Ryu.

Rather than being primarily a technical manual, this book documents the history, personalities, and transmission of Daito Ryu through Hisa's lineage. Amatsu draws upon his firsthand relationship with Hisa to discuss his teacher's life, character, training, and the circumstances surrounding the preservation of this important branch of Daito Ryu. It also provides valuable historical context concerning Sokaku Takeda, Morihei Ueshiba, the Osaka Asahi dojo, and the development of the tradition that would become associated with the Takumakai.

About the Author:

Yu Amatsu (1937–2013) was a Japanese martial artist and journalist best known as the principal inheritor of the Takeda-line Daito Ryu Aiki-jujutsu transmitted by Takuma Hisa. Personally selected by Hisa while working at the Asahi Shimbun, Amatsu received intensive, direct instruction and was entrusted with preserving techniques regarded as closest to Sokaku Takeda’s original teachings. After a period away from training due to professional obligations, he returned to martial practice and became a key instructor and influence within the Takuma-kai and later the Shoshikai, where his open-minded, non-authoritarian approach to training was highly respected.
