About the System

The traditional arts known as Kali, Eskrima, and Arnis encompass stick, knife, and hand-to-hand fighting methods developed over many centuries in the Philippines as its people fought for independence from foreign invaders. Each encounter with a new culture contributed to the development of the Filipino Martial Arts, as warriors devised techniques to combat foreign fighting styles.

Subsequently, more than 100 different Filipino Martial Arts styles developed. These can be grouped into complete self-defense systems utilizing sticks, swords, empty hands, and other weapons.

The core system presented here is a Mountain Visayan fighting system brought to the United States by the system’s founder (Pundador), GM Felix Roiles. His grandfather called the art Pakamut, also known as Pangamut, referring to having “skilled hands” in Cebuano, a Visayan dialect.

GM Felix Roiles shared his family’s fighting system with Marc Lawrence, who had already studied his own FMA fighting system through his travels and experiences. Through his training, travels, and encounters with other systems, Lawrence developed the Modified Pangamut System.

This is the system he teaches and fights with today. Marc Lawrence serves as the Punong Guro (Head Instructor) and is a National Champion in the Filipino Martial Arts.
