Unearthing the treasure trove of private films from the life of Hironori Otsuka, who founded the traditional style of Karate-do known as Wado-ryu and laid the foundation for modern Karate. He meticulously analyzed and studied Okinawan karate techniques, integrating principles from Shinto Yoshin-ryu jujutsu and ancient martial arts. He innovated formats such as kata and kumite, contributing significantly to the popularization and development of Karate-do on the mainland. Recognized for his lifelong achievements, he was awarded the inaugural Karate-do Master and Tenth Dan titles.

In commemoration of his 120th birthday, this documentary features previously unreleased ancient films preserved by the 2nd generation head and supreme instructor of the Otsuka Hironori lineage. Additionally, it includes memories of the founder from the 2nd and 3rd generations of the Otsuka family, revealing the essence of Wado-ryu.

Hironori Otsuka

  • Born in 1892 (Meiji 25) in Shimodate, Ibaraki Prefecture. In 1897, he began studying jujutsu under Nagashima Chojuro, his maternal great-uncle and former martial arts instructor of the old Tsuchiura clan. In 1905, he enrolled in Ibaraki Prefectural Old Tsukuba Junior High School. He studied Shinto Yoshin-ryu jujutsu under Tatsuzo Nakayama, also a swordsmanship instructor. In 1920 (Taisho 9), he received full transmission of Shinto Yoshin-ryu jujutsu and inherited the fourth generation. In July 1923, he began practicing Karate under Gichin Funakoshi. Diligently continuing his training, within a year and a half of joining, he had learned most of the forms. He decomposed and studied Karate techniques, integrating them into Shinto Yoshin-ryu jujutsu and ancient martial arts. He innovated and systematized techniques such as kata, kumite, capturing techniques, encounters, short sword captures, and real sword captures. In 1928 (Showa 4), he completed the technical philosophy of Wado-ryu Karate-do and Wado-ryu jujutsu kenpo and joined the Japan Ancient Martial Arts Promotion Association. In May 1934 (Showa 9), he founded the Dai Nippon Karate-do Club, which later became the current Wado-ryu Karate-do Federation. In 1944, he was appointed Chief Instructor of Karate-do by the Dai Nippon Butoku Kai. In October 1972, he was awarded the inaugural Karate-do Master and Tenth Dan titles by His Highness Prince Toshihiko Tokugawa, Supreme Grand Master of the International Budo Academy and International Budo Federation. He passed away on January 29, 1982, at the age of 90.
