About the Instructor:

Masatoshi Nakayama (1913-1987) was one of the most influential karate masters of the 20th century who significantly shaped the development and global spread of Shotokan karate. After studying under karate founder Gichin Funakoshi at Takushoku University and spending time in China, he returned to Japan and became a key figure in the Japan Karate Association (JKA), serving as its Chief Instructor until his death. Under his leadership, the JKA developed the first comprehensive instructor training program that systematized karate instruction and created international standards, while his emphasis on the scientific principles of karate techniques revolutionized training methods.

Nakayama's legacy extends beyond his technical contributions to include his extensive written works, particularly the 11-volume "Best Karate" series and "Dynamic Karate," which remain essential texts in martial arts literature. He transformed karate from a purely self-defense art to a competitive sport and physical education system, developing the modern competitive scoring system still used in tournaments worldwide. Through his global seminars, demonstrations, and instructional materials, Nakayama made high-level karate instruction accessible to practitioners everywhere, helping to establish what began as a local Okinawan martial art into a global phenomenon practiced by millions today.
