'Judo Through The Looking Glass' is a collection of short Judo stories by British artist, teacher, sportsman and environmentalist Jerry Hicks, MBE, RWA, 7th Dan.
Largely lighthearted and often hilarious they chronicle his own involvement in the sport from his pre World War II adolescence through to the 90's.
Jerry Hicks. MBE, RWA (b. 1927) artist, teacher, sportsman and environmentalist was educated at The Actors' *Orphanage, Rishworth Grammar School, Sandhurst and the Slade School of Art.
Since 1952 he has lived with his wife and fellow Slade student, Anne, in Bristol - where he was art teacher and governor at Cotham Grammar School until 1981. They have two children - film director and actress.
Jerry won The Queen's Silver Jubilee Award and The Bristol 600 Prize for painting. His unusual sport (he is a judo 6th. dan), which he pioneered in the West Country and British schools, provides the background for some hilarious encounters in Judo Through the Looking Glass.
His short stories have been read on Radio 4, and his co-authorship of urban design books, together with satirical articles and lectures (some delivered in disguise!) have contributed to his effective national campaigns to rescue the environments of cities (Bristol's in particular), school sport and our disappearing urban playing fields.
He worked briefly as a cartoonist for Bristol Evening Post and collaborated with his wife on prize winning murals and stage designs for Bristol Arts Centre. In 1994 he was awarded the MBE "for services to sport and the community in the south west"
