In 1945, O-Sensei Hal Sharp was deployed by the US Army in the occupation of Japan. That was the beginning of a lifetime love affair with Judo. He won Japan’s 1st Foreigner Judo Championships in 1954 and was presented with a beautiful silver sake cup from the Prince of Japan.

Not only was Hal Sharp a Judoka and competitive Judoka, he was an avid writer, photographer, cinematographer, and dedicated his life to preserving Judo history with his personal 16mm film archives. He studied and filmed the best martial artists in Post-WWII Japan. He was also the personal bodyguard of the Emperor of Japan on one occasion and managed to take a photograph of the Emperor smiling — which was unheard of in those days.

Talented and well-liked in Japan’s Kodokan, Hal Sharp studied directly under Japanese Legends such as: Kyuzo Mifune, Takahiko Ishikawa, Gichin Funakoshi, Gogen Yamaguchi, and Hidetaka Nishiyama.

In 2012, Hal Sharp received the title of O-Sensei and promotional rank of 10th Dan in Judo from AJJIF GLOBAL.
