The Way to Union with Ki: Aikido with Mind and Body Coordination brings together Koichi Tohei’s teachings on Ki, everyday practice, and Aikido technique in one substantial hardcover volume.

Tohei begins with mind and body unification, explaining Ki testing and his four major principles: keep weight underside, relax completely, keep one point, and extend Ki. He then shows how to apply these ideas in daily activities such as walking, before introducing the foundations of Aikido practice, including posture, distance, stretching, breathing exercises, falling safely, and irimi and tenkan movement. A chapter on what he learned from Tetsuju Ogura, Morihei Ueshiba, and Tempu Nakamura adds personal context to his approach.

The extensive technique section covers responses to wrist and shoulder grabs, strikes, kicks, attacks from behind, and multiple attackers. It includes numerous variations of kokyu-nage alongside techniques such as ikkyo, nikyo, sankyo, yonkyo, and shiho-nage. Separate chapters address the principles and practice of the sword and jo, including forms and responses to armed attacks. The book closes with Tohei’s 13 rules for instructors and includes calligraphy by Tohei.

An in-depth reference for practitioners interested in both the principles and techniques of Tohei’s Ki Aikido.
