The "Jieitai Taiso" (Self-Defense Force Exercise), practiced every morning by the Japanese Self-Defense Forces, is said to be twice as intense and five times as effective as regular radio calisthenics. Originally designed to improve the basic physical strength of Self-Defense Force members, this exercise routine is highly effective for building muscle and enhancing flexibility.

The five-minute routine starts with "Running in Place" and ends with "Deep Breathing," pushing the body to its limits with a substantial amount of physical activity. While the combined six-minute Radio Calisthenics 1 and 2 burns 23 kcal, Jieitai Taiso burns approximately 31 kcal in under five minutes.

This book offers a detailed breakdown of each movement, its benefits, and tips for mastering them, all under the supervision of the Self-Defense Force Physical Training School. Self-Defense Force instructors explain everything thoroughly, making it accessible for anyone—whether you're a woman looking to lose weight, a man aiming for more flexibility, a middle-aged person finding radio calisthenics too easy, or a senior looking to stay fit for longevity.

The accompanying DVD provides the full routine with audio, allowing you to follow along with the exercises. It also includes explanations of correct movements and common mistakes, along with customized versions for different age groups and goals, such as short routines and shape-up versions.

Founded in August 1961 at the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Asaka base as a joint organization for the Ground, Maritime, and Air Self-Defense Forces, the Self-Defense Force Physical Training School has been dedicated to "training physical education and combat instructors for the Self-Defense Forces," "developing athletes who perform on the global stage," and "researching and studying physical education and combat within the Self-Defense Forces." The school has contributed to the enhancement of both the mind and body of Self-Defense Force members and the promotion of sports in Japan, producing many Olympic athletes. During their first Olympic participation at the Tokyo Olympics in 1964, athletes such as Yoshinobu Miyake in weightlifting and Kōkichi Tsuburaya in marathon won medals, showcasing their excellence. Since then, the school has continued to send athletes to every Olympic Games.
