  • Born October 8, 1976, in Tsuruoka, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan.
  • Learned karate in high school and began mixed martial arts after moving to Tokyo.
  • Made his professional debut in December 2001 at DEEP 3rd IMPACT against Tokihisa Tomita.
  • Gained prominence quickly and fought against Suda Masanobu, the then-Shooto Light Heavyweight Champion, within a year of his debut in December 2002.
  • Despite losing by a close decision, his late surge earned him widespread acclaim.
  • In October the following year, defeated Shooto Middleweight Champion Hayato "Mach" Sakurai, further solidifying his reputation.
